The story of a 5-year-old superhero in New Jersey

Alexander was a typical little boy who lived in New Jersey. He attended preschool, played soccer and lived with his Mom, Dad, and baby brother.

Shortly after he turned 4-years old he became a superhero. He found out that he had a malignant brain tumor. After the surgeons removed the tumor, Alex had to use his superpowers to learn to talk, walk and coordinate his movements all over again. He received 6 weeks of daily radiation under anesthesia and endured numerous rounds of chemotherapy, blood transfusions and MRIs. He didn't mind losing his hair because he was a super kid. He met a lot of "superfriends" along the way: other children fighting various types of cancer.

They are all brave children trying desperately to have a childhood while fighting a life-threatening illness.

Along his journey Alexander received the best cancer treatment modern medicine had to offer. He also experienced many beautiful moments throughout. The Tomorrow's Children Institute (located at Hackensack University Medical center, where he received chemotherapy) became Alex's second home. There, he had an oncologist, a nurse, a teacher, a music therapist, a psychologist, a social worker and clowns. He made crafts, played music and conducted science experiments. He spent countless hours in the classroom, playroom, music room, craft room and arcade. He also attended a kindergarten playgroup with his superfriends. His parents received financial support there as well.

Alex's Superhero Fund wants to help provide the same quality of life to other children fighting cancer in New Jersey.

Dear Friend:

I was never a person that got involved in any type of charity work. It was too upsetting to think about children who were very sick. I just assumed that someone else would help these children.

Then our four year old little boy got diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Our comfortable world drastically changed in a moment of time. We now had a child with cancer . . . a little boy with no hair who was fighting for his life. We were emotionally, socially, and financially devastated. We needed help on many levels. Part of that help included financial assistance as I immediately quit my job to be at my son’s side during his treatment.

I was deeply touched by the support we received from the private foundations of families that had lost children. I promised myself that I, too, would work hard to help the local families of children that are diagnosed with cancer or terminal illness. I honor the struggle, bravery, and memory of my young son by giving back to these brave little superheroes that are fighting for their lives. Please help me.

From my heart,

Alexander’s Mom
